How do I wash my wig?

Washing a human hair wig or HRS doesn't have to be a daunting task. With the right techniques, you can keep your hair looking fabulous. Follow these simple steps to properly wash your human hair wig or HRS.

Materials Needed:

- Gentle shampoo

- Conditioner (leave-in & rinse-out)

- Wide-tooth comb

- Towel

- Styling stand

- Styling head (cork preferred)

- Cold or lukewarm water

- T-pins (Generally for Hair Replacement Systems due to size)

- Optional: Plastic wig cap (to go over styling head)

Step 1: Detangle

Before washing, use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle the hair. Start at the tips and work your way up to the roots to avoid causing damage.

Step 2: Pre-Wash Setup

Fill a sink or basin with cold to lukewarm water. Add a small amount of gentle shampoo.

Step 3: Submerge

Gently submerge the wig into the water. Avoid twisting or wringing as this can damage the fibers. Be especially gentle with a lace front, as this area is delicate.

Step 4: Shampoo

Gently distribute the shampoo using your fingers. Be cautious not to tangle the hair. For the cap/base area, lightly press the shampoo through the cap/base if needed, do not scrub.

Step 5: Rinse

Rinse the wig in cold or lukewarm water until the shampoo is completely removed.

Step 6: Condition

Apply a generous amount of conditioner, focusing the mid shaft to ends of the hair. Do not place it in the wig cap/base. Let sit for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing.

Step 7: Rinse Again

Rinse the wig thoroughly in cold or lukewarm water.

Step 8: Towel Dry

Gently pat the wig dry with a towel. Do not wring or twist.

Step 9: Detangle

Spray leave in conditioner, gently comb (wide tooth comb) or brush (detangling brush), place on styling head (on stand), part the hair where you would like it to dry. Be sure the lace, hair and cap are not tucked under. T-pins are helpful to secure hair replacement systems to the styling head. Sliding the pin through the clips, instead of through the base is recommended.

Step 10: Air Dry

Place on a styling stand and allow it to air dry completely or approximately 70% depending on the style desired. If the hair has a curly texture, you may also scrunch and use supporting products recommended by your Hair Specialist. Do not use a hair dryer whenever possible as the heat can damage the hair.

Step 11: Final Styling

Once dry, you can style it as you wish. Use a wide-tooth comb for best results.

By following these steps, you'll be able to maintain the natural look and feel of your human hair wig or hair replacement system. Proper care will not only keep the system looking its best but also prolong its lifespan.
